Who is this TED?
TED isn’t a who, it’s a what. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design, three broad subject areas that are, collectively, shaping our future. The TED conference is an annual gathering of big brains and cool creators in California. Get the full story at TED.com
How is a TEDx event different from a TED conference?
TED conferences are organized and run directly by TED. TEDx events are fully planned and coordinated independently, on a community-by-community basis. The goal of TEDxUTSC is to inspire a passion for spreading ideas in the local UTSC community.
How long are the talks at TEDXUTSC?
All talks are 15-20 minutes – the lengths are determined by our Productions and Speaker Relations team.
Who is presenting at TEDxUTSC?
Interesting people. People at the top of their game. People just starting out. People who’ve done it all and can live to tell the tale. It’s a mix of speakers you won’t see anywhere else. We’ll be announcing members of our top shelf line-up as we get closer to the event.
Can sponsors be speakers?
We love to have sponsors who are aligned with the TEDx mission, but we do not include speaker positions as part of our sponsorship programs. You can learn more about becoming a sponsor here.
Can I speak at TEDxUTSC?
Maybe. Do you have an idea worth spreading? Is it remarkable? Will it entertain, inspire and inform us all at the same time? There are no canned pitches at TEDxUTSC. Leave your boring powerpoint at home. Watch a few TEDtalks BEFORE you consider reaching out to us. This is NOT your average conference. Unfortunately, speaker nomination forms are now closed. Please check back next year!
How can I get involved with this conference?
There are many ways to get involved:
- If you are an expert in your field of work, you can provide your services for our conference by filling out our volunteer application form
- If you are an organization that would like to sponsor a particular component of our event (catering, venue design, technology, etc.) please contact [email protected]
- If you have ideas on how we can make this the best conference ever, let us know at [email protected]
When is our event?
Saturday, February 2nd, 2013. The full experience is 9am to 5pm. The official conference is 9:30am to 4:30pm. You won’t want to miss the arrival experience from 9am – 9:30am with art, music, technology and networking.
Apply for a conference? Seriously?
Seriously. We are limited by TED, for our first conference, to having only about 100 delegates at our first conference. We’re also working to ensure the people attending the conference are as interesting as the people presenting. From fresh minded students to seasoned entrepreneurs, TEDxUTSC will host an interesting mix of talent and experience. If you have positive ideas for the world, you might be just the person we’re looking for. Even if we aren’t able to have you for our conference, we will send you a link to our live stream, which lets you watch the entire conference live from anywhere you like and interact with other viewers through social media.
What type of delegates will be selected?
Since we can only take a limited number of delegates, we are looking for the best of the best. In your application, show us who you are, what you’re passionate about, and above all, what would make you a great addition to our conference. We’re looking for people investing in discussing the topics and providing their own ideas worth sharing.
If I get selected, do I have to attend the whole day of speakers?
Since our space is limited, delegates that are selected are expected to stay for the full day conference (9am-5pm). If you are unable to stay for the full day, please consider giving up your spot for another delegate who may have been initially turned away.
What if I don’t get selected or can’t attend the conference?
If you are unable to attend our conference, never fear! We will be live streaming the conference online so you will be able to tune in through other ways. Additionally, all the videos of our TEDxUTSC talks will be available on our website after the conference.
How much does the ticket cost and what does it cover?
Ticket costs help defray the expense of putting on the event and we will be charging $25 which includes two snacks for conversation breaks and a lunch. Ticket revenue provides a very small portion of the funding for TEDxUTSC. The remainder comes from financial sponsorship and donations.
Do event volunteers need to apply for the conference?
No. We will select all event volunteers prior to opening up the registration application for our conference.
How many volunteers are you selecting?
We like to select based on talent, and don’t have a definite number in mind. We are looking for around 10-15.
Are media passes being offered for TEDxUTSC?
No. TEDxUTSC endeavors bringing together the most innovative local minds by offering our regions change agents an opportunity to create a community. Journalists are welcome to apply personally as attendees, but media passes are not being offered.
